Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge

The Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge is a remarkable destination for outdoor lovers of all ages, offering exceptional opportunities for wildlife viewing, hiking, fishing, and paddling along one of the most celebrated sections of one of the Southeast's most cherished rivers. The refuge is home to the highest population of Cahaba Lilies, making it a must-see destination when these stunning wildflowers bloom in late May and early June. Hikers, paddlers, and nature enthusiasts of all ages will be rewarded with an incredible diversity of wildlife, including bald eagles, ospreys, great blue herons, wood ducks, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and river otters.

The Piper Mine reclamation side of the refuge offers a scenic river overlook with a stunning vantage point to take in the landscape and watch for wildlife along the water's edge. Whether you're introducing young children to the wonders of nature or seeking a serious wildlife photography excursion, the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge delivers an unforgettable experience in every season.

Paddling and wading in this section of river depends on water levels. Find out more on the Cahaba Blueway site. The shoals are very slippery. Enter the river at your own risk.
