Take I-20 W/I-59 S from Birmingham or I-20 E/I-59 N from Tuscaloosa to exit 97 for US-11 S/AL-5 toward W Blocton/Centreville (a left turn from Birmingham and a right turn from Tuscaloosa). Go south on AL-5 S/US-11 S for approximately 3 miles. Turn left onto AL-5 S and go 7.5 miles. Turn left onto Blocton Bypass/Cahaba River Drive and go 5.3 miles. Turn right onto River Trace to enter the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge. There is ample parking at various spots along River Trace’s 1.9 miles.
The closest restrooms, convenience stores, and restaurants are approximately 20 minutes away in West Blocton. The closest hotels are more than 15 miles away. Bring everything you will need for your time in the refuge. There are no trash cans, so plan to carry everything out with you when you leave.
The Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge offers various experiences for people of all abilities. Stands of Cahaba lilies can be enjoyed from your car on River Trace Road, while people who enjoy hiking and wading in the shoals can access trails and Hargrove Shoals, the most spectacular section of lilies.
